They are part of our heritage as well as a tourist amenity. They have great potential in
terms of research and transport. In fact in Europe, the seas and oceans may be a source of immense sustainable growth
which is little exploited at the present time.
The economy in Europe is currently seeking a new source of momentum and we can
no longer ignore the possibilities afforded by the sea in
Europe. As coastal authorities, we are delighted that Europe-wide
consultation has been launched on EU maritime
policy Costal Europe,(through a Green Paper) because it gives form to the
recommendations that we have been making for more than ten years, mainly through
the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions of Europe of the
